What is Slow?

Welcome to the Power of Slow, the blog that accompanies a new book being released by St. Martin’s Press in the fall of 2009. The book is entitled The Power of Slow: 101 Ways to Save Time in Our 24/7 World.

Slow down to speed up. It’s not as paradoxical as it seems.

Slow isn’t the opposite of fast. You can be efficient in your activities, as long as you are mindful. So often we react to things without thinking. Or we act quickly to get things over with without really enjoying them.

The power of slow reminds us we can do things differently, mindfully, and memorably without delving into a hectic, joyless lifestyle.

Come join the journey. You’ll be glad you did.

We have begun a slow journey ourselves – shrinking our circle and finding comfort in the home. I know I’m a better mom when time is spacious. It’s a daily intention – to remain spacious in my planning and actions. Difficult at times, especially with four kids in tow, but well, well worth it.

Love that simple clarity… slow doesn’t mean the opposite of fast, it means doing things with mindfulness! Yes! Also enjoyed the comment about being spacious. I’ve been working from home as a writer and internet publicist, and the sense of time passing, seeing the shifts in sun’s light through the day is so fulfilling to feeling that I am in a particular day, with time through the day – rather than just a flatline racetrack to the next deadline under fluorescent lights.

    Articulate, animated, and inspiring!

I’m emailing this to my mom. She could learn a thing or two from you. 🙂

Excellent concept, and a sensible strategy amid the hectic pace of this thing we call life. Best wishes!
