The Daily Stretch ~ Day #15 “Move with Your Creative Juice”

I am one to hug people when I like them. Even my dentist, who recently told me she’s leaving her practice to study general medicine. Doctors are people do, as today’s daily stretch shows us!

Debra Jaliman is a dermatologist who has had a private practice in NYC for 25 years. In addition, she is an assistant professor at a major teaching hospital.  So yes, her plate is full, yet she found time to streeeeeeetch. All due to the kindness of one teacher she had forty years ago.

About a year ago, Debra received an email from a high school teacher. They had been out of touch for almost four decades. He wrote that he had saved the short stories Debra had written all those years ago. To this day, he believed they were some of the best stories he had ever read. Being that he’s a creative writing professor at a top university, that meant the world to Debra.

And it got her creative juices flowing.

A week later, she was asked to write a chapter in a book that later won the British Book Award for best popular medical book.  Soaring from her creative writing success, she wrote a book entitle Skin Rules (forthcoming January 2012) that she sold in just two weeks (to St. Martin’s Press, my home publisher!)  On a roll, she then wrote a series of children’s books and a film treatment that she is now submitting. Thanks to the kindness of her teacher, and her own ability to move beyond her own perceived limits, Debra rediscovered her creative side.  As a result, we all get to benefit from her confidence.

Can you imagine if T.S. Eliot had said “I really can’t.” The world would be poorer without him. What if you are the next T.S. Eliot (or Debra Jaliman, for that matter?). Enrich us with your talent. It’s there. Live it!

This post is a great reminder that other people see us so clearly. They see our talents, and don’t doubt. They see our faults, and are a little relieved. We can’t leave all the big transformations for the twenty-somethings, can we?
    Thanks,
    Denise
p.s. I attended the workshop that your sister led on Tuesday — it was great!
